Cotton tote bags continue to grow in popularity thanks to their eco-friendly, stylish, and practical nature. They’re versatile enough to be used in a variety of situations and suitable for everyday use. However, before purchasing one, future owners should know the answers to a few key questions: what are the standard dimensions? What affects the price? How should you care for a tote bag to make it last as long as possible? In this article, we answer the most frequently asked questions to help you make an informed purchasing decision - read on to learn more!

What determines the price of cotton tote bags?

The price of cotton tote bags depends on several key factors. One of the most important is the order quantity - the more you order, the lower the unit price. The type of fabric also plays a significant role: bags made from natural, unbleached cotton tend to be more affordable. In contrast, colored versions require additional dyeing processes, which increase production costs.

Another important factor is the printing method. The most cost-effective option is screen printing, which works best for simple graphics and large print runs. On the other hand, DTF (Direct to Film) or DTG (Direct to Garment) offers high-quality results, full-color capabilities, and the ability to reproduce intricate designs - but these methods are more expensive and time-consuming.

The final price of tote bags also depends on additional features - elements such as extra handles, patches, labels, pockets, or reinforcements can significantly enhance the bag’s functionality, but they also increase the overall cost of the project. It’s worth considering which of these options are truly necessary in order to tailor the product to your specific needs and budget.

What is the minimum order quantity for cotton tote bags?

The standard minimum order quantity is 100 pieces, which helps optimize production and printing costs. It’s also important to keep in mind that the larger the order, the more attractive the unit price becomes - higher volumes often come with the benefit of substantial discounts.

A noticeable price drop usually begins at around 500 pieces. Cotton tote bags are a great choice for companies, organizations, or events, as they serve as both practical promotional items and eco-friendly alternatives to plastic packaging.

How long does order fulfillment take?

Order fulfillment time depends on the season and may vary based on order volume and material availability. In 2025, the typical lead time is 7–10 business days. However, as demand increases, this will gradually extend from April onward to around 10–14 business days.

By June, the wait time may increase to 14–17 business days, and during peak season, especially in the second half of the year - it can reach up to 21 business days. This extended production time is expected to continue through December, which is the busiest period. We recommend taking these fluctuations into account when planning your orders.

What are the standard dimensions of cotton tote bags?

The standard dimensions of cotton tote bags depend on their design and intended use. However, as a sewing manufacturer, we can produce bags in any size tailored to the individual needs of our clients. Below are the most commonly chosen models:

  • Flat tote – 38 x 42 cm with handles measuring 2.5 x 63 cm. Perfect for shopping or everyday use.

  • Flat tote with a bottom gusset – 38 x 41 cm with a 10 cm bottom and 2.5 x 63 cm handles. The added bottom space makes it more suitable for carrying larger quantities of items.

  • Boxed tote with gusseted bottom and sides – 38 x 41 cm with 10 cm bottom and side gussets, and handles measuring 2.5 x 63 cm. This reinforced structure offers greater durability, making it ideal for heavier items.

  • Beach bags – a larger model measuring 60 x 40 cm with a 16 cm bottom and 4 x 70 cm handles. A great choice for summer trips.

In addition, we offer a variety of handle widths made from cotton: 2.5 cm, 3 cm, 4 cm, and 5 cm. Shoulder straps (webbing) are available in 3 cm and 4 cm widths.

How to care for a cotton tote bag?

Regular maintenance not only extends the life of your tote bag but also keeps it looking clean and stylish for a long time. We recommend hand washing or machine washing at a low temperature (around 20–30°C / 68–86°F), using mild detergents.

Avoid bleach and harsh chemicals, as these can weaken the fabric and affect the appearance of printed designs. After washing, it's best to air dry the bag naturally - avoid tumble dryers, which can cause the fabric to shrink. If needed, iron the bag at a medium temperature to maintain its neat appearance.

Do cotton tote bags come with reinforcements?

Yes, cotton tote bags can include reinforcements that improve their strength and load capacity. Larger models are often stitched with a five-needle machine, which results in stronger seams that are more resistant to tearing - even with frequent use.

Additional reinforcement can include a lining, which enhances the bag’s structure, improves its appearance, and makes the interior easier to clean. Edge topstitching is also a popular solution - it prevents the fabric from fraying and extends the overall durability of the bag.

What printing techniques are used in tote bag production?

Various printing techniques are used in the production of cotton tote bags, depending on the desired effect, the bag’s purpose, the budget, and the scale of production. Screen printing is one of the most popular methods, known for its durability and vibrant colors—especially cost-effective for large quantities.

Digital printing (DTG – Direct to Garment) allows for precise reproduction of even the most complex designs and gradients, making it ideal for small batches and personalized projects.

DTF (Direct to Film) is a modern technique where the design is printed onto a special film and then transferred to the fabric. This method ensures high detail and flexibility in the final print. For mass production, large-format printing on entire rolls of fabric (DTT – Direct to Textile) is also used. In this process, the design is applied before cutting and sewing, allowing full control over the final appearance of the product.

How long does a cotton tote bag last with regular use?

A cotton tote bag can last a lifetime - provided it is used and cared for properly. Thanks to its durability and resistance to daily wear and tear, a well-maintained bag can serve you for many years, or even decades. Regular washing, avoiding overloading, and storing it in a dry place will help preserve its quality over time.

What types of cotton are used to make tote bags?

Cotton tote bags can be made from various types of cotton, and choosing the right material has a significant impact on durability and long-term appearance. At Natura ECO, we sew bags using both brushed and unbrushed cotton.

Brushed cotton undergoes a special stabilization process that reduces shrinkage - after washing, it shrinks by only around 5%. This helps the bag maintain its original shape and size for longer, which is especially important with frequent use and washing.

Unbrushed cotton does not undergo the stabilization process, which means it can shrink by as much as 10–15% after the first wash. However, this is a natural characteristic of raw cotton. Additionally, our tote bags vary in terms of fabric weave:

  • Plain weave (canvas) – lightweight and breathable, ideal for everyday use.

  • Panama weave – thicker, more durable, and structured, suitable for heavier loads.

  • Diagonal weave (twill) – features a visible, slanted fiber pattern, offering increased flexibility and resistance to abrasion. Depending on your needs, we can offer both lighter and heavier twill options.

Our product range includes organic cotton as well as recycled cotton. Recycled fabric is created by blending cotton with polyester. The polyester content plays a crucial role in reinforcing the delicate fibers of reclaimed cotton, resulting in a more durable material and a more comfortable, long-lasting cotton bags. This makes the final product both stronger and more functional.

What is the weight (GSM) of cotton used in tote bag production?

The cotton used for tote bags typically ranges from 145 to 350 GSM (grams per square meter). Lower GSM bags are lightweight, flexible, compact, and great for everyday use. Higher GSM bags are thicker, more robust, and well-suited for carrying heavier items.

These bags also tend to have a more premium appearance, making them a popular choice for customized or promotional projects. The right GSM depends on the intended use of the bag and the user’s personal preferences.
